Beer + Brunch = Beerunch!

Beer and bites at SF beer week's Beerunch!

SF Beer week is in full swing and I kicked it off with Beerunch. There’s something so genuine about beer lovers, and, when mixed with a sunny Sunday, it makes for a successful brunch. Jim Woods over at Nor Cal’s MateVeza headed the event and he brought on some of his beer buddies for a no-frills, mingle-friendly, buffet-style event. With some noteworthy breweries taking part, I got to revisit some old favorites and discover some new finds too. Here’s the pairing play-by-play:

Beermosa: Dogfish Head Brewery‘s Festina Pêche and Ginger Lemonade

Organic Yerba Mate IPA from MateVeza & Huevos Rancheros with a Pineapple Salsa Fresca

Panagaea Ale from Dogfish Head Brewery & Norwegian Cold Smoked Salmon

Rejewvenator from HE’BREW beer & Pan-Roasted Root Vegetable Medley

Belgian Doom from 21st Amendment Brewery & Maple-Citrus Glazed Ham

Smokestack Lightning Imperial Stout from Magnolia Pub & Brewery & Brussels Sprouts with Applewood Smoked Bacon

Cacao-Infused Payback Porter from Speakeasy Brewing Company & “Choose your own adventure” biscotti

The asterisked pairings were my favorites though it was an all-around enjoyable meal. Just a few sips in, I was a fan of 21st Amendment’s Belgian Doom; the Belgian-style strong beer packs a punch and has the right hint of exotic as it’s brewed with grains of paradise. But the belle of the brunch was Magnolia’s Smokestack Lightning Imperial Stout. A serious beer at 10% ABV, it’s got those smoky, chocolate notes, and that big maltiness I look for in a stout. All in all, lots of fun, slap-you-silly beers, but luckily they were all served in teensy beer glasses as there’s still 7 more days of beer week ahead!
