“It was built as a laboratory of western living,” Sunset Magazine Food Editor Margo True told me. One look at the Sunset Magazine HQ –the authority on western living — with its test kitchens, outdoor grill, working garden, and chicken coop, and I could see it was just that. After years of hearing from fellow food media people how cool the Sunset Magazine set up is, I finally got to take a gander for myself when I visited to cook at this year’s Celebration Weekend.
The pages of Sunset come to life during Celebration Weekend as all sorts of educational entertainment takes place including gardening sessions, wine tastings, glam camping, and, of course, cooking demos take place. I arrived in time to see Bay Area pig master Ryan Farr demo a cheddar sausage and grilling guru Jamie Purviance coach everyone on how to properly use vents.
As for my demo, well, I believe the perfect summer food not only celebrates all the awesome seasonal produce but also keep things low-fuss. That said I combined some of my favorite summer produce in this Summer Salad, kicked up the spice a bit with these Shrimp Piri Piri, and then toasted the season with the simple, but crowd pleasing Dead Manzana Walking cocktail.
Now that the weathers warming up how do you plan on celebrating the season?
