In anticipation of my first book event in Los Angeles this weekend, I ask LA-based mom blogger extraordinaire, Catherine McCord, of Weelicious, what her key to the kitchen is.
True to her style, she’s got an answer that’s key for busy moms everywhere. Speaking of which, her first book, Weelicious, has also just been published, which advocates the concept of one family, one meal, and, for the occasion, we decided to do a giveaway.
So, read on for her key to the kitchen then check below for how to win one of the two Weelicious cookbooks we’ll be giving away next week.
Q: Catherine, we’re dying to know, what is your “key to the kitchen?”
A: My favorite key to the kitchen is my freezer.
I don’t know what I would do without all that precious frozen real estate. I organize and fill my freezer with a bit of almost everything I make during the week. I’m a big advocate of doubling up recipes as often as possible when you cook. So, on those crazy busy nights when you’re too tired to make dinner, or on those mornings when you need to be out the door fast but first have to get breakfast in your kids’ bellies, you’ve got labeled zipper bags or containers already filled with everything you could need: pasta sauce, ripe fruit, raw vegetables, pesto, muffins, waffles, lasagna, pancakes, veggie or chicken nuggets and more.
The convenience of having a variety of frozen items at your fingertips is only bested by the fact that your kitchen prep time is cut drastically as all you usually need to do is pop your food into the toaster or defrost and cook it briefly in the oven and you’re home free.
Even when I make cookies, instead of baking five dozen that will inevitably get eaten way too quickly, I only bake what we’re going to eat that day and freeze the remaining balls of raw cookie dough for later. So not only is the freezer the key to my kitchen, it’s also the key to controlling my waistline!

Though my new cookbook is called Keys To The Kitchen, the reality is that there are too many to publish in one single book. So, I’ll be asking some of my favorite food people from each city I’ll be visiting on my book tour to share his or her very own key to the kitchen in this interview series — read other interviews here.
