Word on the street is that it’s Cinco de Mayo today. Which, is a big bummer because it’s a holiday that’s really best celebrated on the weekend. I’d even go so far as to say that having Cinco de Mayo on a weekday is in direct violation of the official Cinco de Mayo rules.
The way I look at it, having this boozed-out and burrito-clad holiday on a Monday means one of two things: a) you celebrate over the weekend and are in need of a hangover cure today or b) you want a mini celebration that you can pull together without regretting it at tomorrow morning’s staff meeting.
For the latter, this is my solution: a Mexican slant on the classic Italian afffogato I’m calling the Cafe de Olla Affogato.
So: you know how affogato is simply espresso over ice cream? In true Italian form, it’s perfect in its simplicity. Here I’ve tweaked that ever so by topping it with the cinnamon-spiced Cafe de Olla, which means you get your sugar high and caffeine kick all in one, which, depending on how you’re faring today might be just what you do (or don’t) need.
